MODEL PEEK: The Elegant Sudanese Pace Setter, Alek Wek [PHOTOS]

When it comes to the identification of a true super model, it takes more than beauty; an elegant physique and decent bone structure and charisma are some of the prerequisites to make it as a fashion model. These days, however, it seems that the younger African models have followed the footsteps of some of big names like Alek Wek, in order to achieve their desired goals.

Alek Wek could appear to you as a cool headed person or girl-next-door but her resume as a model speaks for her. She has commanded the runways of fashion designers such as: Chanel; Hermes; Donna Karan; Christian Lacroix and Zac Posen. She has a career that has thrived in Paris, New York, Milan and London and she has also appeared on the covers of high-end fashion magazines such as Elle, Glamor, Cosmopolitan and Essence. The black beauty has also been the face of campaigns for Benetton, Kenzo and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Her rise in the fashion world and modeling is worth emulating; breaking through in the modeling industry is not something that happens often especially for an African girl, who hails from Sudan. She was born in 1977 to a family of nine that later fled due to the uprising in the country – from both the rebel and government forces. Wek and her family arrived in London, aged 14, and her passion for modeling was noticed by a scout in a South London market and she has been a model ever since.

She wasn’t just a typical model who graced numerous runways, but one with unique qualities standing at 5’11 with short hair, dark brown complexion, oval shaped eyes and well positioned cheek bones. She set records and also paved way for other successful African models today - Wek was the first African model to appear on the cover of Elle magazine in 1997.

It is almost impossible for anyone to neglect the ravishing figure and poise she possesses. Even media mogul, Oprah Winfrey commented that “if [Wek] had been on the cover of a magazine when I was growing up, I would have had a different concept of who I was.”

The 37-year-old is still in the game and we hope to see more of her for years to come.
